Tarmac Contractors In Town
Our tarmac contractors in Town lay tarmac hot in two layers, a coarser base (binder) course first and then a dense, finer surface (wearing) course on top of it. Tarmac and asphalt is all we do.
On a new driveway we dig out the existing surface and the sub-base under it, then a new 804 base goes in and is machine rolled with a vibrating roller of around 20 ton. Only then is the tarmac laid.
A well laid tarmac driveway gives around 20 years, with a tarmac sealer every 5 years. The sealer soaks into the pores of the aggregate and replaces bitumen that has been lost over the years, which is what brings the colour back.
What We Lay In Town
Tarmacadam and asphalt are the same work. A lot of people call the surface course SMA, stone mastic asphalt.
On tarmac driveways across Town the border is fitted first, on the base, and the tarmac is laid inside it, so the edge is set before the surface is laid. That border is block paving or granite.
Tarmac is black, so the border is the only colour decision on a tarmac driveway, and a block paving border can be red, brindle, charcoal or natural grey. A paved apron at the entrance with a matching border is popular too.
Most driveways with a border take us 3 days from dig out to laying, or 2 days for a small driveway with no border. You can walk on it immediately and drive on it after 24 hours.
Driveway resurfacing is the overlay, laid over existing tarmac, concrete or any hard standing that is already there. A bitumen sealer goes on the old surface for adhesion, then the new tarmac is laid and rolled in. It takes 1 day.
On tarmac repairs the patch is cut out and rebuilt, with the cut edges bitumen bond sealed. A patch always stays slightly visible. So where several areas have sunk, we recommend reinforcing the weak spots and resurfacing the whole driveway instead.
Tar and chip driveways are a sprayed binder over an 804 base with stone chip rolled in.
We also take on commercial tarmac for laneways, car parks, private estate roads and similar work.
